A number of company quoted on Mesdaq are from Penang. Like online recruitment agent Jobstreet.com; made in Malaysia ERP software Karensoft; non listed entrepreneur like Cari.com and Chan Hong Saik of e-Business Sdn Bhd.
We also have venture capitalist or Angel investor Ahmad Kabeer Mohamed Nagoor which has invested in a few high-tech company like AKN Tehnology and AKN MTech.
Founder of e-Business Sdn Bhd Mr Chan Hong Saik said majority of their staff are hire from University Sains Malaysia of Penang. The company's product are used by a lot of multinational bank. This proved that graduate from USM is competitive.
Thus, Penang has netpreneur, angel investor and a university that able to produce quality graduate. Why Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) still restricted to Cyberjaya, KLCC area.
Like Ireland, Penang able to attract investor of multinational like Intel etc, but MSC failed to get large enough investment from company like Microsoft compare to Ireland and India. I feel if Penang island declare as MSC. It would signifiantly improve our country competitiveness against Ireland and India.
Remember that our competitors in this globalization world is country like Ireland and India. Not among any state within our country.

Penang does not need someone to rubber stamp the word "MSC" onto it like the one in Klang valley. People know about this and will act appropriately as you have rightfully said. Investors, businessman, academicians, workforce etc. all will follow where the business flows.
Many decisions are political rather than anything else.
Interesting… but what for? MSC is a pork project by Tun Mahathir to grovel at the feets of international tech corps hoping, just hoping, they would set up shop right next to his immensely wasteful new administrative capital.
Want more people to invest in Penang? Get Penang economic and political autonomy from Kuala Lumpur. If there is anything Penang should be declared as, it should be as a free port.

Penang has already received MSC status.
As you can see MSC at cyberjaya is a property development venture.
Software development work can happen anywhere, MSC status tie those company down to places with vested interest.
Malaysia was once more advance than singapore in "internet type of activities." Why are we so far behind, so unable to deliver anything substantial after MDC/MSC iintervention?
Let's put it this way... anything that receive "some high profile status, there will be alot of "personal interests" involved, and alot of resource & project allocation misplaced.
My sense is this: we are very very far behind now and it is just going to get worse. We are so week in knowledge. Never, have been in a position so vulnerable.

I left Penang for Hong Kong. I knew AKN since early 2002. AKN Mtech is not even a technology company, no competitiveness to say about. They just sell sms credits and cheat consumer money subscribing to magnum 4d and toto results. Penang does not need such company. We need more technology based companies so more people will invest in Penang.
Well, great blog and great post, thanks for sharing such nice information.
